What is this

Squalane

Squalane is a clear, weightless emollient oil — the stable, hydrogenated form of squalene, a lipid naturally present in human skin. Because it mirrors skin's own lipids, it absorbs easily and comfortably, helping to reduce moisture loss and support a soft, supple, healthy-looking barrier.

Squalane is a weightless, silky emollient derived from squalene, a lipid the skin produces naturally as part of its own protective film. Hydrogenated for complete stability, plant-derived squalane mirrors skin's own composition so closely that it absorbs instantly, without residue or heaviness. It helps reduce moisture loss, supports the skin barrier and leaves every skin type — including oily and sensitive — feeling supple, smooth and comfortable. In The Nine Aurora's night formulas it acts as the quiet foundation of nourishment, restoring softness while the skin rests.

Questions about squalane

What is squalane and how is it different from squalene?

Squalene (with an "e") is a lipid skin makes naturally, but it is unstable and oxidises quickly. Squalane (with an "a") is its hydrogenated, fully stable twin — the form used in skincare, today typically derived from plants such as sugarcane or olives.

Is squalane good for oily or acne-prone skin?

Yes — it is one of the few oils dermatology sources routinely recommend for oily skin. It is non-comedogenic, absorbs fast and feels weightless, giving hydration without shine. Because it resembles skin's own sebum, it moisturises without ever leaving a greasy feel.

What does squalane do for skin?

It works as an emollient and barrier-supporting lipid: it softens and smooths the surface, helps reduce transepidermal water loss and reinforces the feel of the skin's protective film. Skin stays comfortable and supple, and fine dryness lines look visibly softened.

Can squalane be used every day?

Every day and every season. It is famously well tolerated — stable, odourless by nature and compatible with actives like vitamin C and retinoids. We use it in the night serum, night cream and night cleanser, where it supports skin's overnight routine of rest and renewal.
