How The Nine Aurora Beauty Zones Created an Integrated Ecosystem to Support Long-Term Skin Health
By Dušan Popović, CEO & Founder, Byteout
Turning a Skincare Brand Into a Digital Platform
When our team at Byteout began working on The Nine Aurora Beauty Zones project, it was immediately clear that this would not be a typical beauty e-commerce implementation.
Most skincare brands build their digital presence around a storefront designed primarily to sell products. The Nine Aurora project required a different approach. The objective was to create a digital ecosystem capable of supporting a philosophy centered on skin longevity, consistent skincare rituals, and long-term engagement with customers.
Rather than building a website that simply facilitates purchases, the platform needed to function as a system that helps customers understand their skin, follow structured routines, and maintain those routines over time.
From a technical perspective, this meant designing an architecture where multiple technologies could work together seamlessly. Each component had to support a specific part of the customer journey, from diagnostics and education to subscriptions, loyalty programs, and customer support.
The infrastructure was built on Shopify, chosen for its flexibility and ability to integrate specialized technologies. However, the strength of the platform does not lie in the core system alone. It comes from the ecosystem of tools surrounding it, creating a digital environment where skincare routines become part of a long-term relationship between brand and customer.

Translating Scientific Research Into a Digital Experience
The Nine Aurora Beauty Zones is built on a strong scientific foundation. The brand’s research explored how environmental conditions, nutrition, culture, and genetics influence skin health across the world.
Over the course of five years, researchers collected more than one hundred thousand biophysical and ethnobotanical data points across more than fifty countries. This work led to the identification of nine regions where skin demonstrates exceptional resilience and vitality.
These regions became known as the Aurora Beauty Zones and inspired the ingredient sourcing strategy behind the brand’s formulations. More than three hundred botanical ingredients were studied before the final actives were selected.
However, the research revealed an important insight. Even the most advanced formulations cannot deliver long-term results without consistency in use.
This realization shaped the design of the digital platform. The system needed to guide customers through skincare routines and help them maintain those routines over time.
To make the brand’s research accessible, the platform organizes the digital experience around three discovery pillars. The first pillar focuses on the science behind skin longevity and explains the dermatological insights that informed the formulations. The second introduces the nine global regions that inspired the ingredients. The third highlights the botanical actives themselves and their functional role in supporting skin health.
This structure allows customers to explore the brand at different levels of depth. Some users are drawn to the scientific explanation of the research, while others prefer to discover the ingredients or follow the rituals directly. The platform supports both approaches, transforming complex research into an intuitive experience.

Designing a Connected Technology Ecosystem
Supporting skincare consistency requires more than educational content. It requires technology capable of guiding customers through their skincare journey.
The platform therefore integrates several specialized technologies, each serving a specific role in the ecosystem.
Understanding the condition of the customer’s skin is the first step. For this reason, the platform integrates Revieve, which enables advanced digital skin diagnostics. Users can analyze their skin and receive insights about hydration levels, elasticity, tone balance, and barrier condition. Instead of limiting the experience to a one-time diagnostic, the system encourages users to track their skin through a Skin AI diary. This allows customers to monitor changes in their skin over time and observe how consistent routines influence long-term results.
Consistency is further reinforced through the loyalty program powered by LoyaltyLion. The loyalty system rewards behaviors that encourage skincare discipline rather than purely transactional purchases. Customers earn points when they maintain subscriptions, purchase refill products, or share reviews about their experience with the products.
Maintaining continuity in routines is another essential component of the platform. To address this, the ecosystem integrates Recharge, which allows customers to receive their skincare essentials automatically. Subscription services ensure that products arrive before they run out, removing friction from the purchasing process and helping customers maintain uninterrupted routines.
Communication with customers is managed through Klaviyo, which serves as the CRM layer of the ecosystem. Klaviyo enables personalized customer journeys based on behavioral data such as purchase history, subscription activity, and loyalty status. Customers receive educational content, routine reminders, and guidance tailored to their skincare journey.
Customer support is managed through Gorgias, which centralizes communication across multiple channels and allows support teams to access customer orders, subscriptions, and product data from a single interface. To complement this system, the brand works with TalentPop, providing trained specialists who assist customers with skincare questions, product recommendations, and order management.
Trust is reinforced through customer feedback collected via Okendo, allowing users to share detailed insights about product performance and routine compatibility. These reviews help new customers understand how the formulations perform across different skin types.
Accessibility is also integrated into the platform through EqualWeb, ensuring that the digital experience adapts to different user needs through features such as screen reader compatibility and visual accessibility tools.
Together, these technologies create a connected ecosystem where diagnostics, subscriptions, loyalty systems, CRM communication, and customer support all reinforce the same goal: helping customers maintain consistent skincare rituals.

Building Technology That Supports Skin Longevity
Many beauty brands treat digital platforms primarily as sales channels. The Nine Aurora Beauty Zones project demonstrates how technology can serve a broader purpose.
The digital ecosystem was designed to support long-term skincare behavior rather than short-term product promotion. Diagnostics help customers understand their skin. Subscriptions ensure continuity of routines. Loyalty programs encourage consistency. CRM communication keeps customers engaged with their skincare journey. Reviews and support systems build trust and transparency.
This interconnected architecture transforms the platform into more than an online store. It becomes a digital environment that accompanies customers as they develop and maintain skincare rituals over time.
The development of this ecosystem was guided by a close collaboration between the technology team and the brand’s strategic vision. The platform architecture was shaped in partnership with Mattia Miglio, whose experience in e-commerce ecosystems and digital partnerships played a key role in identifying the technologies capable of supporting the longevity model.
By combining scientific research, structured skincare rituals, and a carefully designed digital infrastructure, the platform demonstrates how technology can help transform skincare into a long-term discipline.
In an industry often driven by trends and short-term promises, this approach represents a different direction — one where technology supports the consistency required for true skin longevity.
